A Comprehensive Analysis of the Three Major Types of Pallets

2025-06-11

Pallet selection directly impacts cargo safety and customs clearance efficiency in export transportation.
Three primary pallet types dominate the market: Fumigation-Free Pallets, Heat-Treated Pallets, and Plastic Pallets. This guide analyzes their characteristics and optimal use cases to streamline your logistics strategy.

01 Fumigation-Free Pallets

The first type is Fumigation-Free Pallets, also known as Plywood Pallets. They are constructed using multi-layered plywood that has undergone high-temperature, high-pressure treatment, bonded together with adhesive. Since the material is thermally treated before manufacturing, it bypasses inspection and quarantine procedures and is ready for direct export use. However, its load capacity is moderate, and the central area is prone to damage. Pay attention to cargo weight when selecting this type of pallet.

02 Fumigation Pallets

The second type is Fumigation Pallets, also known as Fumigated Solid Wood Pallets. These offer excellent load capacity and are highly recommended. Why emphasize "fumigation"? Because untreated wood may harbor insects and eggs, posing a high risk of introducing harmful pests. This could disrupt the ecological balance of the importing country, lead to invasive species, and cause severe harm to agriculture and forest resources. Therefore, international regulations require solid wood pallets to undergo treatment meeting the IPPC phytosanitary standard before they can be imported or exported.

03  Plastic Pallets

This type of pallet is less commonly used in daily operations. The emergence of plastic pallets responds to environmental needs, as they serve as the optimal product to replace wooden pallets and reduce deforestation. Amid growing emphasis on food safety concepts and high hygiene standards in the pharmaceutical industry, plastic pallets have gained widespread favor and preference in these sectors due to their features: corrosion resistance, moisture resistance, rust prevention, insect resistance, and mold resistance.

Additionally, plastic pallets offer advantages such as high load-bearing capacity and extended service life. Furthermore, customs authorities in some countries impose unreasonable demands—requiring wooden pallets to provide fumigation certificates. The time-consuming process of obtaining these certificates often delays shipments. Switching to plastic pallets eliminates such complications, ensuring goods move smoothly without any issues.

04 Comparative Analysis

Pallet Type Advantages Limitations
Fumigation-Free

1. Zero quarantine procedures

2. Lower cost

1.  Weak central load capacity

2. Light cargo only

Heat-Treated

1. Heavy-duty performance

2. Global compliance

3-5-day ISPM 15 certification process

Plastic

1. No phytosanitary requirements

2. Superior hygiene

3. Avoids customs delays

Higher initial cost (offset by longevity)

05  Selection Guidelines

Scenario Recommended Solution
Lightweight goods / Urgent shipments Fumigation-Free Pallets
Heavy cargo / Standard exports Heat-Treated Pallets
Food/Pharma/ECO requirements Plastic Pallets

Optimal pallet selection balances cargo specifications, timeline constraints, and regulatory costs. Fumigation-free pallets excel in speed, heat-treated options boast unmatched strength, while plastic pallets ensure zero-compliance-risk clearance. Scenario-based matching achieves both operational safety and cost efficiency.
