The US and Iran may return to negotiations in the next two days

2026-04-16

On April 14th local time, US President Trump publicly released signals of the resumption of US Iran negotiations in an interview with Fox News Channel, explicitly suggesting that both sides may return to the negotiating table in the next two days. At the same time, he claimed that the Iran conflict was "approaching its end", which has attracted widespread attention from the international community. It is reported that if the second round of face-to-face negotiations between the United States and Iran is successfully restarted, US Vice President Vance will once again lead the US delegation to attend. Trump's envoy Witkov and his son-in-law Kushner will also participate in the negotiations. Since the end of the first round of US Iran negotiations last weekend, the three have been in close communication with the Iranian side and third-party mediators, responsible for promoting diplomatic negotiations related matters.

Previously, on April 11-12, the United States and Iran held the first round of face-to-face negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, marking the first time in recent times that the two sides have formally sat down to communicate and negotiate. Although no substantive agreement was reached in this negotiation, there were obvious differences between the two sides on core issues such as the Iranian nuclear issue and control of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran later stated that the negotiations were in a "climate of distrust," but neither side completely closed the door to negotiations. Pakistan, as a mediator, is also continuing to coordinate and create conditions for subsequent negotiations between the two sides.

In sharp contrast to the signals of easing released at the diplomatic level, the US military is continuing to exert military pressure on Iran. Starting from April 13th, a comprehensive maritime blockade of Iranian ports has been officially launched, covering all Iranian ports and surrounding coastal areas in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It is reported that the blockade operation has deployed over 10000 personnel from the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, equipped with more than ten warships and dozens of fighter jets, forming a tight maritime blockade network, which has basically cut off economic and trade exchanges entering and leaving Iran by sea. As of April 14th, 8 ships attempting to enter and exit Iranian ports have been successfully intercepted by the US military. Under the orders of the US military, these ships have changed course and returned; On April 15th, the US military intercepted another Iranian cargo ship attempting to evade the blockade. After leaving the port of Abbas in southern Iran, the ship attempted to bypass the blockade area and was eventually forced to turn back by a US Navy destroyer. A total of 10 ships have been ordered to return, and currently no ships have successfully broken through the blockade.

Faced with the strong blockade pressure from the US military, Iran's attitude is resolute, clearly stating that the US maritime blockade is "destined to fail". A spokesperson for the Iranian armed forces stated that if the security of Iranian ports is threatened, any ports in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea will no longer be safe; The acting Iranian Defense Minister also announced that the Iranian armed forces are on the highest level of alert and fully prepared for various possible situations. At present, while maintaining military confrontation, the United States and Iran are still maintaining contact related to negotiations. However, the core differences are difficult to reconcile in the short term, and there is still uncertainty about whether Trump's implied "return to negotiations in the next two days" can be successfully implemented. The international community has called on both sides to exercise restraint, persist in resolving differences through diplomatic channels, avoid further escalation of the situation, and jointly maintain regional peace and stability and global energy security.
